Filter CloudWatch Metrics

AWS CloudWatch can generate a tremendous number of metrics from many different AWS services. AWS CloudWatch Metric Streams sends all of those metrics to a Streams endpoint, in this case, Sysdig Monitor, which can often contribute to noise and impact MTTR and root cause analysis of any issues in your AWS infrastructure. Additionally, ingesting high volume of non-essential metrics into Sysdig can incur unnecessary data storage cost.

To mitigate this problem Sysdig provides you an option to filter metrics from individual AWS namespaces as they are ingested, limiting the amount and volume of metrics from AWS CloudWatch Metric Streams ingested into Sysdig. With metric filtering, you can include or exclude specific metrics collected across AWS namespaces.

All the metrics are enabled by default.

Disable Metrics Ingestion

  1. Log in to Monitor as an administrator.

  2. Open Integrations > Cloud Metrics.

  3. Select the appropriate AWS account, then click Manage Metrics. The Manage Metrics page will be displayed.

  4. Find the metrics you want to disable by using:

    • Search bar
    • Metrics Drop-down
    • Click the relevant namespace then filter metrics using the above method

  5. To disable metrics, select the metrics and click Disable Metrics.

Disabling metrics will stop ingesting the selected metrics for this Sysdig account and will impact all the regions connected.

Expect a 5-10 minutes delay for the changes to reflect on the Monitor UI.

Enable Metrics for Ingestion

  1. Log in to Monitor as an administrator.

  2. Open Integrations > Cloud Metrics.

  3. Select the appropriate AWS account, then click Manage Metrics.

    The Manage Metrics page will be displayed.

  4. Find the metrics you want to filter by using:

    • Search bar
    • Metrics Drop-down
    • Click the relevant namespace then filter metrics using the above method

  5. To enable disabled metrics, select the metrics and click Enable Metrics.
